This may be administrative or support staff who encounter overcontrolled clients or their family members on a daily basis and need to know enough about RO DBT to 

  • explain RO DBT to prospective clients and/or their family members.  
  • understand the language and behaviors used by RO DBT-trained therapists. 
  • support and strengthen RO DBT principles and techniques in everyday interactions with patients.
  • understand why RO DBT therapists use teasing and silliness with their clients. 
  • manage common maladaptive behaviors such as pushbacks and don’t hurt me’s.

  2. Radical Openness and Self-Enquiry: 25 minutes
  3. The Key Mechanism of Change: 26 minutes
  4. Therapeutic Teasing and Silliness: 36 minutes
  5. Indirect Social Signals and Disguised Demands: 45 minutes

Total number of hours: 2 hours and 46 minutes

Certificate

At the end of the course, you are asked to complte an online evaluation form and a knowledge quiz. If you answer 80% of answers correctly, you can download a certificate of completion.

Course Instructor: Dr Thomas Lynch

\Thomas R. Lynch, PhD, is Professor Emeritus in the School of Psychology at University of Southampton. He was the Director of the Duke Cognitive Behavioral Research and Treatment Program at Duke University (USA) from 1998-2007.

Dr Lynch is the treatment developer of Radically Open-Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (RO-DBT)—a new transdiagnostic treatment approach informed by 20+ years of clinical research. He is the author of the RO-DBT treatment manual titled “Radically Open- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for Disorders of Overcontrol” as a well as the RO DBT Skills Training Manual (2018; Context Press).

Dr Lynch has been the recipient of multiple large research grants from a range of sources, including the National Institutes of Health, National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, the Hartford Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, and the National Institute for Health Research. He was also the Chief Investigator of a multi- centre randomized controlled trial examining the efficacy and mechanisms of RO-DBT funded by the NIHR- Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation programme (http://www.reframed.org.uk/; Lynch).

He is a recipient of the John M. Rhoades Psychotherapy Research Endowment and a Beck Institute Scholar. He is recognized internationally as a world-leading expert in difficult-to-treat disorders; such as, personality disorders, chronic depression, and anorexia nervosa and is in frequent demand as a speaker internationally—e.g., Europe, USA, and Canada.

‘The Basics’

1. Introduction to RO DBT and Research Support: in this video, Dr Lynch

  • explains why we need a new treatment for clients with maladaptive overcontrol. 
  • summarizes the research supporting the efficacy and effectiveness of RO DBT.
  • briefly explains the treatment structure and why we use silliness in RO DBT.

2. Radical Openness and Self-Enquiry: In this video Dr Lynch will teach you what is meant by Radical Openness. You will learn: 

  • how you can practice Radical Openness yourself using the three steps from the first Radical Openess skill ‘Flexible-Mind DEFinitelty’; and
  • what self-enquiry is and how to do self-enquiry in the heat of the moment, when you are feeling challenged about something.

3. The Key Mechanism of Change: in this webinar, you will learn what makes RO DBT different from other treatments, namely via its unique focus on social signaling.  Dr Lynch will teach you 

  • What we mean by a ‘social signal’. 
  • The key mechanism of change in RO DBT.
  • The importance of expressing your emotions in a context-dependent manner.

4. Therapeutic Teasing and Silliness: in this video, Dr Lynch explains why we use teasing and silliness when working with overcontrolled clients. You will learn:

  • That RO DBT therapists use therapeutic teasing to provide feedback to their clients; 
  • That therapeutic silliness is used to signal friendliness and non-dominance; and
  • The difference between therapeutic teasing and silliness.

5. Indirect Social Signals and Disguised Demands: in this video, Dr Lynch explains how overcontrolled clients tend to use indirect social signals that can negatively impact their relationships. You will learn:

  • That overcontrolled individuals tend to underreport their emotions, which can make it seem like ‘all is fine’.
  • What pushback and don’t-hurt-me responses are, how to recognize them and how to deal with them.
