Detailed Video Descriptions

1.       Introduction to RO DBT and Radical Openness: This video consists of two parts. In the first part, Dr Lynch

  • explains why we need a new treatment for clients with maladaptive overcontrol.
  • summarizes the research supporting the efficacy and effectiveness of RO DBT.
  • briefly explains the treatment structure and why we use silliness in RO DBT.

In the second part, Dr Lynch will teach you what is meant by Radical Openness. You will learn:

  • how you can practice Radical Openness yourself using the three steps from the first Radical Openness skill ‘Flexible-Mind DEFinitely’; and
  • what self-enquiry is and how to do self-enquiry in the heat of the moment, when you are feeling challenged about something.

Video duration: 58 minutes

2.       The Key Mechanism of Change: in this webinar, you will learn what makes RO DBT different from other treatments, namely via its unique focus on social signaling.  Dr Lynch will teach you

  • What we mean by a ‘social signal’.
  • The key mechanism of change in RO DBT.
  • The importance of expressing your emotions in a context-dependent manner.

Video duration: 26 minutes

3.       Therapeutic Teasing and Silliness: in this video, Dr Lynch explains why we use teasing and silliness when working with overcontrolled clients. You will learn:

  • That RO DBT therapists use therapeutic teasing to provide feedback to their clients;
  • That therapeutic silliness is used to signal friendliness and non-dominance; and
  • The difference between therapeutic teasing and silliness.

Video duration: 36 minutes

4.       Indirect Social Signals and Disguised Demands: in this video, Dr Lynch explains how overcontrolled clients tend to use indirect social signals that can negatively impact their relationships. You will learn:

  • That overcontrolled individuals tend to underreport their emotions, which can make it seem like ‘all is fine’.
  • What pushback and don’t-hurt-me responses are, how to recognize them and how to deal with them.

Video duration: 45 minutes

5.       The Bio-Social Theory of RO DBT: in this video, Dr Lynch explains how a person can develop an overcontrolled coping style. This is typically the result of a combination of the client’s bio-temperament and the family or culture they grew up in. You will learn:

  • The bio-temperamental characteristics of overcontrolled clients, i.e., what they are born with; and
  • The types of behaviors that were punished or rewarded by the environment that led to increasing the likelihood of developing a maladaptive overcontrolled coping style.

Video duration: 47 minutes

6.       Assessment of Overcontrol: this video is intended for staff who carry out triage assessments and need to learn how to identify overcontrolled clients who may benefit from RO DBT. In this video Dr Lynch teaches

  • the differences between overcontrolled and undercontrolled clients;
  • about common errors and assumptions when diagnosing OC clients, and how to avoid these;
  • a step-by-step approach to diagnosing overcontrolled clients using measures from the RO DBT textbook.

Video duration: 69 minutes
